GSTR-4 – Composition Scheme Return
What is GSTR-4?
GSTR-4 is a GST return that was previously required to be filed quarterly by taxpayers who have opted for the Composition Scheme under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime in India. However, since FY 2019-20 onwards, GSTR-4 is now filed annually, not quarterly.
1. Who Should File GSTR-4?
Taxpayers registered under the Composition Scheme under Section 10 of the CGST Act, including:
Manufacturers (other than those of ice cream, pan masala, or tobacco)
Traders
Restaurants not serving alcohol
2. Due Date for Filing GSTR-4
Annually: The return must be filed by 30th April following the end of the financial year.
Example: For FY 2024-25, the due date would be 30th April 2025.
3. Details Required in GSTR-4
Summary of outward supplies (sales)
Inward supplies attracting reverse charge
Tax payable and paid
Amendments to previous year returns
Import of services (if applicable)
4. Penalty for Late Filing
Late fee: ₹50/day (₹25 CGST + ₹25 SGST) up to a maximum of ₹5,000.
If no tax is payable, the late fee is reduced to ₹20/day (₹10 CGST + ₹10 SGST).

6. How to File GSTR-4
GSTR-4 can be filed online via the GST portal using the following steps:
Log in to the GST portal
Go to Returns Dashboard
Select financial year
Click on GSTR-4 – Annual Return
Fill in required details
Submit and file using DSC/EVC
